A State of Innovation
The No. 1 High-Tech State
New technologies, new products, new opportunities - Bavaria is the No.1 high-tech state in Europe. More than twelve per cent of all the people working in the Free State work in the high technology sector, more than anywhere else in Europe. Names like Siemens, EADS, and MTU stand for the most modern technological developments. International companies, for example from the electronics or the pharmaceutical sectors, are coming to Bavaria and setting up production facilities here. In addition a large number of new high technology and state-of-the-art technology firms are being set up. They all ensure that Bavaria is at the forefront of innovation and technology.
Bavaria meets all the conditions. Here high-tech companies can find everything they need: highly qualified staff, an extremely well-equipped infrastructure, modern research facilities and universities as well as technology-friendly basic conditions. Research and technology policies in Bavaria have long concentrated on so-called key technologies, which are particularly innovative and possess great growth potential: aerospace technology, IT and communications technology, life science, medical technology, material research, environmental technology, mechatronics, and nano-technology. Such technologies will become even more important in the future, because the other economic sectors also profit from the growth dynamics in the high-tech sector and its innovations.
Shaping Rather than Owning
This is the central principle of the Bavarian policy of privatisation, which says that the state should withdraw from its involvement in firms which can flourish equally well in private hands, leaving it free to invest the proceeds from privatisation in important areas for the future. Since 1993, the state has invested almost 5 billion Euros derived from privatisation specifically in state-of-the-art technology, education and research, infrastructure and social and cultural projects important for life in Bavaria. The impetus of innovation, the dynamism of development and the quality of life in Bavaria have all been lastingly strengthened above all by the programmes "Offensive Zukunft Bayern" ("Bavarian Offensive for the Future") and "High-Tech Offensive".

Galileo and Columbus
Oberpfaffenhofen is world-famous in the field of space travel. For more than 35 years the „Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt" (DLR - German Aerospace Centre) has guided manned and unmanned space missions from "Bavaria's Houston". The ultra-modern Columbus control centre co-operates with the European Space Agency ESA and maintains contact with the European space laboratory on board the international space station ISS. One of the two control centres for the new European satellite system Galileo is currently being established in Oberpfaffenhofen. As of 2010, the thirty Galileo satellites will permit global positioning accurate to a few centimetres.
